Du Juan Ad Campaign for Anna Sui, Spring/Summer 2009

This ad for Anna Sui's Spring/Summer 2009 collection, starring Du Juan, is taken from her Japanese website. The ad does not appear on the US website, which isn't surprising because I have never seen an Anna Sui ad in a mainstream US publication like Vogue or Elle. Even Anna Sui herself admitted in a recent interview with New York Times that majority of her revenue comes from the Asia-Pacific region (particularly from sales of fragrances and cosmetics) like Japan, Taiwan and Hong Kong, where she is extremely popular.

That said, this is probably one of the best print ads I've seen this season. The colors are amazing and Du Juan looks spectacular here. Even the typography is excellent, especially with the "fallen" letters -- very hip and cool. Great job, Anna!

Liu Wen Editorial for China Vogue, March 2009

Liu Wen is EVERYWHERE!! She has (so far) walked in more runway shows in New York, London & Milan than any other Asian models this season and she has at least five ad campaigns out this Spring -- ck one, DKNY Jeans, Benetton, Diane von Furstenberg and Barney's New York.

Here is a new editorial from China Vogue, March 2009. I love the first and third photos and if Liu Wen was in only two shots in a multi-model editorial, I would have loved everything about it. But using the same model, the same set, the same lighting, the same facial expression and the same pose, the whole thing just looked repetitious and utterly boring.

That said, Liu Wen is the NEW FACE of China so expect to see her in EVERY ISSUE of China Vogue from now on until a new girl comes along. China Vogue should be credited for its diversity, i.e. using Asian mode ls from different countries (Koreans, Japanese, Asian-American, etc.) but creativity isn't the magazine's strongest asset.

Sonny Zhou Ad Campaign for Saks Fifth Avenue, Spring 2009

At first glance, I thought it was Liu Wen in this ad campaign for Saks Fifth Avenue. But as I scanned and edited the photos, I realized it was actually Sonny Zhou. It is great to see her back in a US-based fashion publication again -- this 5-page ad appeared in US Vogue, March 2009.

Sonny was one of my favorite Asian models when I started this blog over 2 years ago but she sort of disappeared over a year ago following the invasion of South Korean models like Hyoni Kang, Hyun Yi Lee and Daul Kim.

Does anyone know what she's been up to lately? She must have been in NYC a couple months ago to do this photo shoot so I expect to see more of her work appearing soon. Foreign-based models usually come to NYC after their agencies have booked them a couple of jobs back-to-back. Sonny Zhou is based in Beijing, China.

Case in point, NY-based model, Gwen Lu was in Paris last July/August and was photographed by Naomi Yang (Paris-based photographer) for Taiwan Vogue, September 2008 and French Biba, October 2008. At the same time, she also booked editorial jobs for French Glamour, November 2008 and French SOON Magazine, Spring 2009.
